The Paediatric Asthma and Allergy Clinic at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Hospital

The Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital (CMJAH) situated in Parktown in the Gauteng Province, is a highly specialised health care facility offering tertiary/ quaternary health care services. The hospital serves as a referral centre for surrounding regional hospitals in the greater Johannesburg area and often receives referrals as far as other neighbouring provinces in South Africa.

The paediatric Asthma and Allergy Clinic is situated in the Paediatric Pulmonology outpatients department and takes place once a week on a Thursday morning. We have four permanent doctors, three nursing sisters and access to additional specialist referrals such as ENT, ophthalmology, dermatology and physiotherapists and dieticians. We see and manage a variety of paediatric allergic conditions including asthma, allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, food allergy, atopic eczema, urticaria and anaphylaxis. We offer skin prick testing and blood testing for various allergens including aero- and food allergens and have access to formal lung function for our asthmatics. Our nurses are trained to perform lung function tests and to provide education on asthma and allergic diseases.

In addition to the clinical health care service, our clinic offers a platform for medical training and research. The CMJAH is affiliated to the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand. We regularly have a variety of medical professionals rotating through our clinic to learn about paediatric allergic and respiratory diseases, from undergraduate medical students, to registrars training in the fields of paediatrics and haematology, to postgraduate doctors training for postgraduate courses/ degrees. Our unit over the past few years has successfully trained twelve doctors in the Diploma of Allergology, three doctors in the Certificate in Paediatric Pulmonology and has had one doctor obtain an MSc Dissertation through research. We take pride in our passion to impart a culture of academic excellence in our unit.

Appointments for our clinic are usually through referrals from other doctors or health care professionals.
