What Are These Conditions?

Cold-Induced Urticaria (ColdU) and Symptomatic Dermographism (SD) are both forms of Chronic Inducible Urticaria (CIndU). This means they are forms of chronic hives that happen when the skin
reacts to certain triggers.

• Cold-Induced Urticaria (ColdU): When the skin is exposed to cold temperatures like cold air, water, or even holding a cold drink, itchy, red welts (hives) or swelling can appear within minutes.
• Symptomatic Dermographism (SD): Also called “skin writing,” SD occurs when rubbing, scratching, or pressure on the skin causes raised, itchy welts. Everyday activities, like carrying a bag, wearing tight clothing, or even scratching an itch, can lead to visible reactions.

What Is It Like to Live with These Conditions?

For many people, these conditions are unpredictable and disruptive.

• Flare-ups can happen suddenly in daily situations, leading to discomfort, visible hives, and sometimes swelling.
• The itching, burning, and pain can interfere with sleep, work, social life, and overall quality of life.
• Some people avoid certain activities such as swimming, outdoor events in cold weather, or wearing certain clothing for fear of triggering symptoms.

While antihistamines are the main treatment options, many patients continue to have symptoms even with daily medication.

The EMBARQ Study for cold urticaria (ColdU) and symptomatic dermographism (SD) is now enrolling volunteers. This research study is evaluating the safety and effectiveness of an investigational medication, given by injection, for people living with these conditions.
