AFSA Learning Academy – Training initiatives for 2019

We hear it over and over – “Allergies are on the rise”! Not everybody suffers from allergies, but most of us know somebody who does. There are certain sectors where knowledge and training around allergies and allergic diseases is absolutely vital and potentially life-saving, such as schools, restaurants and clinics, and for this reason The Allergy Foundation of South Africa (AFSA) has embarked on an Online Training initiative.

AFSA was established to create awareness, to advise and educate patients with severe allergic disease, asthma and primary immunodeficiency, to promote responsible care, to assist with advocacy and to raise funds for professional development.

AFSA has now set up the AFSA Learning Academy in recognition of the fact that implementing online training initiatives will create awareness around the growing allergy phenomenon, help to reduce allergic reactions, improve response to life-threatening reactions, and protect children and adults with food allergies.

Here are some of the sectors we’ll be targeting with Online Training in 2019.

  • Food establishments providing food to the public – practical information and strategies for Food Handlers while reinforcing Government regulations and guidelines
  • Schools – General awareness for allergy sufferers – aimed at all teachers and students; In depth training for School Allergy Action Committee members
  • Medical community (Doctors, Pharmacists, Nurses etc.) – Allergic Diseases programme consisting of 7 modules
  • Dietitians – An in-depth programme covering all Food Allergy aspects
  • Corporates – A general awareness programme for all staff; A more in-depth programme aimed at in-house clinics/nurses and Health & Safety Committees.

Our interesting, interactive, self-paced courses are filled with a range of multimedia content and include assessments. They are hosted on the AFSA Learning Academy Learning Management System and are supported by a dedicated AFSA Helpdesk.

AFSA are currently filming a number of instructional ‘how to’ videos – e.g. How to use a nasal spray; How to use an asthma pump; Emergency asthma treatment; and others. These videos will form part of the online training and will also be available on our website.

The development of the training programmes and videos have thus far required substantial dedication and funding, and we are very grateful to those who have supported us in this vital initiative – including UCT, ADSA, FACTS and our digital training partners, Competence Online.

Great news for those of you who are interested in educating yourselves further via the AFSA Learning Academy – we are in the process of setting up an E Commerce Platform – which will allow interested persons to self-register and pay online for various courses.
