South Africa has one of the highest asthma death rates in the world, with around 15000 deaths each year. The effects of asthma can worsen during allergy season as many of the same substances that trigger your allergy symptoms may also cause asthma signs and symptoms and exacerbate them. Paediatric pulmonologist Professor Heather Zar, and Allergy Foundation SA CEO Professor Mike Levin came up with and helped develop a new device called the AfriSpacer, which makes inhalation of medication from an asthma pump easier and far more effective.
