Emollients in SA – Matching Cream to patients
(Content updated in March 2025)
The Emollient Prescriber, maps the South African landscape of emollients and studies patient perceptions of different base-ingredients in emollients. It was approved by the University of Cape Town (UCT) Faculty of Health Science Research Ethics Committee. The study was conducted by UCT medical students, supervised by A/Prof Jonathan Peter, AFSA, and supported by the staff at the Allergy and Immunology Unit, University of Cape Town, Lung Institute.
Prior to mapping the landscape of emollients available for the maintenance treatment of atopic dermatitis patients, a protocol was developed outlining specific inclusion and exclusion criteria to determine whether emollients would be included in the final table or not.
Included are leave-on emollient products available in South Africa and marketed for maintenance use in atopic dermatitis. Every effort has been made to reflect all products and prices as of January 2025 (for full details on how list was compiled see www.lunginstitute.co.za/aiu/). The AFSA Seal of Approval confirms that product/s conform to strict scientific criteria attesting to their quality (further details at www.allergyfoundation.co.za).
Prior version was completed in August 2018.
